IREEN is an European Commission “Coordination Action”, promoting and supporting the networking and coordination of research innovation activities in Europe.  IREEN will examine how technology can be used for energy efficiency and improved performance in large areas. For example neighbourhoods and extended urban and rural communities. 

 The project will develop a  roadmap for energy-positive neighbourhoods.Energy positive is the capacity to    generate more power than needed by consuming low energy or reduced  energy over the lifecycle.  The IREEN roadmap will link and prioritise actions through the innovation life cycle: RTD (Research & Technological Development), experimentation and   validation, the transfer to market and       deployment, and standardisation.

 An Advisory Experts Group, drawing on the knowledge of key individuals across industry, academia and cities,will work with the project consortium to validate the outcomes as well as acting as a catalyst for implementation.

IREEN will be a key contributor to the EU leadership in ICT enabled energy efficiency through intelligent solutions and will support the achievement of Europe’s objective to save 20% of energy consumption by 2020.
