Giuseppe Guarino received his degree in nuclear physics from the University of Bari, Italy. From 1987 to 1991 he held research positions in heavy ion nuclear physics at the GSI (Darmstadt, Germany), at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (Berkeley, California) and at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (Bari, Italy). From 1991 to 1993 he circumnavigated the globe with his sailing boat together with his wife and his three year old daughter. In 1993 he moved to San Francisco (California) were he became, first a partner in, and subsequently, President of Electromagnetic Instruments Inc. (EMI), a startup  R&D company specializing in electromagnetic techniques for oil and mineral exploration. In 2001 EMI was acquired by Schlumberger, the largest oil-field service company worldwide, and Giuseppe became a Schlumberger Technology Center Manager. In 2004 he decided to pursue the calling of contemporary art painter, left Schlumberger and moved first to France and later to Fardella (2006), a small village in the Pollino National Park in Basilicata (South Italy), where he is developing his own approach to the issue of preserving art-consciousness under the pressures of globalization. In 2007 he began his activity as a Civil Protection volunteer in the Association “Protezione Civile Gruppo Lucano.” Since then he has participated actively in several major disaster relief operations (the Abruzzo earthquake in 2009, and the flooding of Metaponto in 2011) and held several positions within the association. He is also actively involved in the public debates regarding management of oil resources in the Val D’Agri and sustainable human development in Basilicata.
